Directing Day

Calm and in control my directing day came by fast. I was excited and knew what was going to happen. I had something I wanted accomplish and in some ways, I succeeded it. Here's the process of me making my short and what you should look out for.

Pre-Production

Make sure you know what you want. During pre-production, it was good. I was already working on the shots I want around Christmas and I had a clear vision on what I wanted. I think as a director you need to have a clear vision on what you want and to be able to deliver it and communicate with to you DP( Director of Photography). I felt there were times where I was communicating very well. We still were able to get on the same page any way which was good but it is a learning process and to make sure that doesn't happen again.

I enjoyed discussing it with my DP. It was exhausting but it was a great time to be living. Because my shoot is on Monday, I had to come in Sunday to build the set. So me and my friends were working 14 days straight. That's how we have to go isn't it? We have 1 day to shoot and 12 more to do.

Production

Then came Monday, my shoot. Being a director is to look calm even though you feel stressed about all of this. As everyone says, you are the captain of the ship. I had a good time that day. Hannah and Sammy, my actors had a great time and enjoyed being on set. I do sometime wish I could've worked on the performance more but at the same time, I am an actor and would rather work on the performance and director giving notes to the actors. Sometimes I would want more than what they are doing. I wouldn't use those specific words but something an actor can work with.

I felt calm and relaxed. That's how a director should be. I didn't have to get involve with the crews because I already knew what they are going to and let that be there job. If I were to turn back time, I would get my friends out when they are not needed and get the actors out every time we change set up.

I can't say anything about the post-production much since I haven't started yet. I won't be editing my short but hopefully it will come out good. If I had learnt anything from this experience is, I want to do this and it's not going to come easy but just keep your head up high.
