Fashion In Film

Through the years, fashion has developed itself through to sport. It has now become a thing where if you ride a horse, there is a fashion about that or playing tennis. I grew up riding horses and what was considered a fashion. I don’t understand why however, whenever there is fashion attached to a sport, it frustrates me. Here are some examples.

Challengers, starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Fiest. A film following Tashi(Zendaya) a young promising tennis player who came down with an injury forcing her to quit tennis. The film was an example of “Fashion” in sport. With all the brands surrounding such as Aston Martin, it was clear to me that the film is telling the story of how the sport is filled with this fancy life style. Where as even though there was a character played by Josh, it was not aimed down how he is fighting for his life to play the game he loves. For me, if they focused on Josh’s story, it would bring a whole different perspective of reality of the sport.

By fashion, I mean the status and point of view it is being seen from outsiders. It is viewed that the rich play the sport which I completely disagree, it is not about the status, it’s about the passion and commitment someone has worked really hard on. You can’t see hard work as a fashion, you see it as grit, sweat and tears they put it. It seems kind of unfair to those who actually try there best to play tennis or whatever sport they are trying to do for a living or even have in their life.

An example of a non fashion sport film, Secretariat. A film telling the story one of the greatest race horses ever. An American women is left with her late fathers affairs and saves a horse which they call “Big Red”. The film follows women in sport. How they are not accepted and treated like a stupid person. This is the real world where people do experience still to this day. Sexism in sport but the grit to keep going, the hunger for the win and the love for the horse. It shows the bond of horse and human and how the real world, it is so hard to gain the trust and the opportunity for a women to shine with her horse. This is real sport. Pain, tears and grit to fight to succeed, what film should be showing, not reminiscing the luxury of it. True, the luxury is nice but the horses and people who have had to let go of that dream because of a big obstacle which can’t be helped or handled with.

Comparing two tennis films, King Richard is a truly inspiration and filled with grit and hardworking that we acknowledge from the two all time best tennis players. This is sport. The films which are shown with drama and the tears and pain each athlete goes through.

Overall, the industry of film shows a lot how people view sports. It is becoming increasingly popular among people to see sports as a fashion and are now following. The perks of it is it brings people to start exercising properly but giving them the wrong mindset. A solution to this is instead we should promote sport as a fun way to interact and create healthy habits.
