Movie Review: Maria (2025)

A bio pic following the famous Opera singer, Maria Callas. A film directed by Pablo Larraín Written by Steven Knight Starring Angelina Jolie

Really enjoyed the music throughout the film. It caught the emotion of each scene and was beautiful to listen to. I went in to the theatre not doing any research about this film but I came out understanding what the film is about and Maria's relationship with the people around her and her life with the opera. The way the story is told and how the colour temperature changed to show us what timeline we are on. Throughout the film it was simple but beautiful shots that held a heavy topic on her life. Maria herself seems to me was a very cold person who has a hard time dealing with lost of confidence with her voice and her career.

Jolie's performance was so powerful and subtle. However, when she starts singing it does look as if she is lip syncing the songs which I felt does take away the emotion of the scenes and music a bit.
